Former cricketer Suresh Raina believes that India captain Rohit Sharma might be playing his final ICC tournament at the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. With the next major ICC events (excluding the T20 World Cup) scheduled for 2027, Suresh Raina feels the 37-year-old may not continue as skipper beyond this cycle.
Rohit Sharma Eyes His Fourth ICC Trophy
Raina pointed out that Rohit Sharma has a golden opportunity to secure his fourth ICC trophy if he leads India to Champions Trophy glory. The veteran batter has already guided India to the 2024 T20 World Cup title, adding to his illustrious achievements in international cricket.
Speaking on Star Sports’ Game Plan (via Mid-Day), Suresh Raina emphasized Rohit Sharma’s importance as a batter in the upcoming tournament:
“This could be his last ICC trophy as captain, and if he wins, he will become the first India player to win four ICC trophies. He has already won the T20 World Cup, and securing the Champions Trophy would be a remarkable achievement. He will be motivated to make it happen, but scoring runs will be crucial for him.”
Suresh Raina Praises Rohit Sharma’s Captaincy and Tactical Acumen
The 2011 World Cup winner lauded Rohit Sharma’s leadership, highlighting his ability to bring the best out of his bowlers and strategize effectively in white-ball cricket.
“Rohit Sharma is an attacking captain. The way he utilizes his bowlers is commendable—bringing in Mohammed Shami at crucial moments and strategically using spinners. When Rohit Sharma scores runs, it also reflects in his captaincy.”
Notably, Rohit Sharma was India’s second-highest run-scorer at the 2023 ODI World Cup, finishing just behind Virat Kohli. His ability to lead from the front with the bat has been crucial for India’s success in cricket.
“His Approach Will Remain the Same” – Suresh Raina on Rohit Sharma’s Aggressive Batting
Suresh Raina further urged Rohit Sharma to stick to his aggressive batting style, which has been a defining trait of his ODI performances in recent years.
“I think Rohit Sharma should play aggressively. You saw how he batted in the ODI World Cup—he was attacking even in the final. So, I believe his approach will remain the same. The key question is who will open alongside him—will it be Shubman Gill? I remember, whenever they play together, they maintain an aggressive intent.”
Suresh Raina also highlighted Rohit Sharma’s improved strike rate since the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he scored 597 runs in 11 matches at a strike rate of nearly 120, cementing himself as one of India’s most impactful ODI batters.
Rohit Sharma to Lead India in India vs England ODI Series
Before the Champions Trophy 2025, Rohit Sharma will next be seen in action during the three-match ODI series against England, starting in Nagpur on Thursday, February 6. This series will serve as an important test for India’s preparations, with Rohit Sharma playing a key role as both captain and batter.
As Suresh Raina mentioned, winning the Champions Trophy could be a historic milestone for Rohit Sharma in what might be his final ICC tournament. Will he be able to lead India to another ICC title?
