India’s Resilience at the Gabba
India heads into the Gabba Test following a heavy loss in Adelaide, but they hold fond memories of the venue from their remarkable victory during the 2020-21 tour. That historic win broke Australia’s fortress at the Gabba, securing India’s consecutive Test series victories in Australia. Despite this, the hosts remain focused on the present. After recovering from their defeat in Perth to level the series in Adelaide, they are determined to keep momentum.
“The biggest thing for us is focusing on this week and not what’s happened in the past,” Marsh said. “The way we bounced back from Perth shows that we’re really focused on playing our style and hopefully going 2-1 up in the series.”
The Bumrah Challenge
One of the key challenges for Australia will be dealing with Jasprit Bumrah, the world’s No.1 bowler. Bumrah has dismissed Smith twice in three innings and taken out several other top-order batters. Marsh, who has yet to face a delivery from Bumrah that’s resulted in his wicket, believes that applying pressure is crucial rather than simply surviving his deliveries.
“We know he’s probably the best bowler in the world right now. It’s all about getting up for that challenge,” Marsh said. “It’s a big series, and you want to take on the best. That’s my mentality. I’m looking forward to facing him again.”
“I think each batter has their own plan,” he added. “As a batting unit, we support each other’s strategies. When you face the best bowler in the world, trying to just see him off won’t work. He’s going to get you eventually. The key is to apply pressure and take him on with your own method.”
Marsh’s Bowling Readiness
Marsh also addressed his role as a bowler, revealing that team management has communicated a clear plan regarding his bowling workload. Having struggled with injuries in the past, he said he was ready to bowl as much as required, whether to break partnerships or give the other fast bowlers a breather.
“We had a clear plan before the series started. I didn’t bowl as much as I would have liked before the series, but our medical staff, Ronnie, and Patty [Cummins] were really clear about my preparation, and I trusted that,” Marsh explained. “I haven’t had to bowl too much so far, but my body feels really good. I’m ready to bowl as much as Patty needs me to.”
“We haven’t seen a lot of bowling from our all-rounders in Australia over the past few years, but I’m really grateful to our medical team and coaches for giving me the space to recover between Tests,” he continued. “I feel well placed now. Whether it’s bowling five overs to get a breakthrough or just providing a rest for our quicks, I’m ready to contribute in any way I can.”
