Mohammed Siraj and Travis Head have been penalised following an on-field incident during the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar series.
Sanction for Siraj
Mohammed Siraj has been fined 20% of his match fee after breaching Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. This article pertains to “using language, actions, or gestures that disparage or could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon dismissal.”
Sanction for Head
Travis Head was also sanctioned for breaching Article 2.13, which relates to “the abuse of a player, player support personnel, umpire, or match referee during an international match.”
Demerit Points and Acceptance
Both players received one demerit point each on their disciplinary records, marking their first offence in the last 24 months. Both Siraj and Head admitted to the offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle.
The Incident in Adelaide
The pink-ball Test in Adelaide saw tempers flare between the two teams, with the series having significant World Test Championship implications. The incident occurred when Travis Head was dismissed by Siraj after scoring a fiery 140. Following the dismissal, Siraj gave Head a pointed send-off by gesturing towards the dressing room.
A verbal exchange ensued, but the two players later reconciled on the field when Siraj came out to bat during India’s second innings.
Australia’s Dominant Victory
Australia bounced back from their massive 295-run defeat in Perth, securing a 10-wicket victory in the day-night Test. Travis Head’s brilliant 140 off 141 balls was the standout performance and the key difference between the two sides. Head was named Player of the Match for his efforts.
Top Performances by Australia’s Pacers
Australia’s pacers delivered a masterclass in favourable conditions. Mitchell Starc (6/48 and 2/60), Pat Cummins (2/41 and 5/57), and the returning Scott Boland (2/54 and 3/51) were instrumental in the team’s dominant win.
Impact on the World Test Championship Standings
With their victory, Australia temporarily moved to the top of the ICC World Test Championship standings. However, they were quickly displaced by South Africa, who overtook them after a win against Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, India slipped to third place in the standings.
